Flap discs (also called flap wheels) are versatile coated abrasive tools that combine grinding, deburring, blending and light polishing in one unit. Unlike rigid grinding wheels, a flap disc is assembled with dozens of overlapping sanding flaps bonded onto a rigid backing plate. The flexible layered structure is its biggest advantage.
During operation, the outer abrasive flaps wear gradually and self-sharpen, continuously exposing fresh abrasive grains. This delivers stable cutting performance from start to finish. Compared with rigid grinding wheels, flap discs produce less vibration, lower heat and better surface finish. They can follow curved and irregular workpiece surfaces, making them ideal for weld blending, edge chamfering, rust removal, paint stripping and surface preparation before coating.
Flap discs are sorted by abrasive type and grit size. Aluminum oxide flap discs are economical for carbon steel. Zirconia alumina flap discs stand up to heavy stock removal on stainless steel and high-tensile steel, widely used in metal fabrication workshops. Ceramic grain flap discs offer premium longevity for high-volume industrial production. Grit ranges from coarse 36# / 40# for heavy grinding, medium 60# / 80# for weld smoothing, up to fine 120#–240# for finishing and polishing. Standard sizes include 100mm,115mm,125mm, 180mm for angle grinders.
Practical Usage Tips
Work at a 10–15° angle to the workpiece, avoid flat full-face contact and excessive pressure. Heavy pressing will burn the workpiece and shorten disc life. Keep the disc moving steadily across the surface.
DELUN flap discs adopt high-quality sand cloth and reliable bonding technology. The flaps are tightly arranged with strong adhesion, resisting delamination during long working hours. We supply T27 flat type and T29 conical flap discs for different grinding scenarios, supporting OEM & ODM for global distributors and end users.
